Antioch’s Red Sand Project
In 2016 alone, the National Human Trafficking Hotline received 1,323 reported cases of human trafficking in California.
The success of the “SB1193, Day of Action”, reaching all specified businesses in East Contra Costa County, we are determine to do more. With full support from City Manager, Ron Bernal, Police Chief, Tammany Brooks, and Councilwoman Monica Wilson collaborating with the Contra Costa Human Trafficking Coalition and bringing the #RedSandProject to Antioch to increase awareness of this human rights issue. The Antioch’s Red Sand Project event will take place on Thursday October 19th, 2017 at the Antioch Community Center starting at 4pm until 8pm.
The “SB1193, Day of Action” was a regional effort, collaboration with local law enforcement from the cities of Antioch, Pittsburg, Brentwood, Oakley and volunteers, the group visited the specified businesses in East County. Volunteers worked in small groups to distribute materials to the specified businesses to educate them about the law and help bring awareness to this important issue. Bringing more businesses into compliance can help spread vital information about the resources available to those who may need them most. The Senate bill 1193 law requires specified businesses and other establishments to post a notice informing the public of telephone hotline numbers to seek help or report unlawful activity. Specified business can include truck stops, liquor stores and adult oriented businesses, in addition to other locations where human trafficking is likely to occur.
The Red Sand Project is an artwork that uses participatory sidewalk interventions to raise awareness of the vulnerabilities that lead to human trafficking. Free toolkits will be distributed to the public by the Coalition. Simply come grab a tool kit and spread awareness throughout the community. The city hopes that by symbolically bringing attention to the cracks that victims of human trafficking can slip through, they can help others begin to understand how this issue impacts our communities. On this day, the city invites members of the Antioch community and all neighboring communities to take the time to fill sidewalk cracks with red sand and document their sidewalk transformations on social media using #RedSandProject.
