Antioch’s Red Sand Project
October 19, 2017 @ 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm
The City of Antioch with the support of City Manager, Ron Bernal, Police Chief, Tammany Brooks, and Council Member, Monica Wilson in collaboration with the Contra Costa Human Trafficking Coalition is bringing the #RedSandProject to Antioch to increase awareness of this human rights issue.
The Red Sand Project is an artwork that uses participatory sidewalk interventions to raise awareness of the vulnerabilities that lead to human trafficking. In 2016, the National Human Trafficking Hotline received 1,323 reported cases of human trafficking in California. Human traffickers use force, fraud, or coercion to control victims against their will.
It is our hope that by symbolically bringing attention to the cracks that victims of human trafficking can slip through, we can help others begin to understand how this issue impacts our communities. On this day, we are inviting the members of the Antioch community and all neighboring communities to take the time to fill sidewalk cracks with red sand and document their sidewalk transformations on social media using #RedSandProject.
PARTICIPATE: Free toolkits will be distributed to the public by the Coalition in front of the Antioch Community Center. Simply come grab a tool kit and spread awareness throughout the community and share it on social media.
LEARN: A free training, Human Trafficking 101, will take place at the Community Center from 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM for those who would like to take a more in-depth look at this issue. Registration required, please complete the Eventbrite Registration on this page: http://redsandprojectantioch.eventbrite.com/
