Sanitary Sewer Overflows also known as SSO’s are one of the main issues the Wastewater Collection Systems Division is here to prevent. Sewage overflowing into the street is a problem for residents, the City of Antioch, and our environment. Our crews are actively trying to lower the amount of SSO’s that occur each year through preventative maintenance and other innovative measures.
One such innovative measure is SmartCover technology, a real-time, web-based monitoring system installed at strategic locations throughout the City, which alarms when an overflow is about to occur. This improves response time, allows staff to be immediately dispatched to the area of concern to reduce the likelihood of a spill,
and enhances service to our customers.
In 2020, during this same period, 17 SSOs occurred. Currently, only 9 SSO’s have occurred, with two concurrent No-Spill months. This is a 53% decrease.
