Antioch High students were treated to a special presentation on Nov. 5. Antioch Police officers Kevin Tjahjadi and Kyle Smith brought their K9 partners (Kaia and Kona) to the after-school program’s Animal CARE Club. Officers Tjahjadi and Smith shared info about their careers and life with their furry work – and home – companions. Both dogs are Belgium Malinois and “trained in the areas of protection, searching, tracking, article searching and narcotic detection.†The officers also showed what Kona looks like in action when handling a suspect. Kaia and Kona are just two of the six canines the department has on staff. The APD has boasted a canine unit since 1964. According to the APD website, the dogs help “our effectiveness in our efforts to apprehend criminal violators, locating missing persons and the (tracking down) crucial items of evidence.â€
